First, report any crime to the police. It is important to get a police report as well as all of the names of the law enforcement officers that you have spoken with. If there are any witnesses to a theft or vandalization, keep track of them as well.
Second, call your insurance agent or company immediately. Be sure to have the following information available to give them: Date of loss, type or loss or damage, location of damage, any related injuries, others involved, condition of the home, description of damaged contents, whether or not temporary repairs are necessary, and the police report (if you involved the police).
Third, if you need temporary repairs, such as a board up or roof tarp, get those taken care of immediately. Always keep receipts to submit for reimbursement.
Fourth, if you need to relocate, do so immediately. Keep your receipts for those accommodations. Keep receipts and record of all additional expenses.
Fifth, make sure your insurance company sends you claim forms.
Sixth, It is likely that an adjuster will need to come out and inspect your home.
Seventh, be patient.
